In him 

was life, and 
that life was the light 
of men.

It's not easy to explain the john text, at all.
It's Greek philosophical terms have their own rootedness
in then-time understanding of phrases, logical-linguistics.
The Word-Logos is "Him" as much as God is "Him" of masculin terms.
The "life" is more like enlightenment, as "light" as wisdom, as it is
the Logos itself.
Through the new beginnings, the new enlightenment was created, and
its new  wisdom is the form of this new spirit-science as the torch, lightening
up the path for men to walk on.
